Gray signs for Watford

Watford have broken their transfer record to sign Andre Gray from Burnley for £18 million to take the club’s spending beyond £30 million this week.

The striker signed a five-year contract, thought to be worth about £70,000 a week, and his arrival follows that of the Brazilian attacker Richarlison, who cost £13 million from Fluminense. Gray was in the final year of his contract at Burnley and rejected a new deal after the club refused to yield to his pay demands. He initially asked Burnley to treble his £25,000-a- week wage. Gray scored ten goals last season but was banned for four matches after being found guilty by the FA of bringing the game into disrepute over homophobic posts he made on Twitter in 2012.
