His connection is through owner Peter Lim, the Singapore businessman who also has a 50 per cent stake in Salford City – the non-league club bought by Neville along with brother Gary, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.
Neville will replace 28-year-old Scottish coach Ian Cathro, who will be confirmed as McClaren’s new assistant at St James' Park this week.
The former England star – who won 59 caps - had previously turned down the chance to join Moyes at Real Sociedad and has taken his time to consider the offer from Valencia.
But Neville always preferred the prospect of a career in coaching as opposed to punditry and he is now set to relocate to the Mediterranean coastal city.
